Paul Pruitt: And we are here with Photographer Entrepreneur. We're really excited. The crew over LightPro asked us to come on, to be part of the weekly challenge. Yeah, so we're really excited. Melissa Pruitt: Hi, I am Vanessa and Margie. Hi guys!
Paul Pruitt: So from Michigan and St. Petersburg. So Margie, you're gonna be at LightPro because that's like local. I have family at St. Petersburg also. My entire family is originally from Florida. So we're in the northeast, we're in Wilmington, Delaware. And if you don't know where that is. That's probably where you send your credit card payment your entire life. So it's something that I tell people, we're basically a suburb of Philadelphia. It's how we look at it. But really excited to be part of LightPro this year. We really enjoy teaching. We do a lot of online teaching. We travel around. We've been to a lot of the major conferences and this is an incredible conference that we're so excited to be part of. You know what, I think I heard a beep. So I'm just gonna make sure our line is off, that way you're not gonna hear beep, some pops.
Melissa Pruitt: Turn the volume. There we go. Awesome! And Sabrina's in there. Hey Sabrina!
Paul Pruitt: Hey! So what we want to do during this. Because a lot of you might not know who we are. So we're not gonna spend a lot of time on this. But to give you a little backgrounder on us. Did you want to go first? Or you want me to go first? It's up to you.
Melissa Pruitt: It's up to you.
Paul Pruitt: Yeah. See, we're live. That's what the great thing about this, right?
Melissa Pruitt: You go first.
Paul Pruitt: Okay, I'll go first. So on my end, I used to own a very large real estate company. And I use to travel around the United States teaching tens of thousands of sales people around the world for major real estate brand. Myself, personally, I went from zero. I come from a poor background. I've been homeless three times in my life in total. Most recently, about ... Actually it's nine years ago now where I went from nothing. I build up to a multimillion dollar career. And I lived very, very well. And I lost everything because I retired. I was traveling around, teaching in-person sales into the real estate world. Negotiating, marketing, branding, positioning tens of thousands of people. And what happened is I took the eye off the ball and I had family running my business. And they took money out of it and it imploded back in 2008 when the market shifted. And I lost everything.
I went from multimillion dollar lifestyle to where my humble beginnings began. And I was homeless back in 2008 and it took about six months. I sold all my furniture, sold everything. Thankfully, I've owned a camera since I was seven years old. And I loved photography. I took four years of it in high school. When I made a lot of money in real estate, I traveled around the world and I hired topnotch mentors, paid tens of thousands of dollars because it really was like my side thing. And they showed and trained me about lighting, about posing, about commercial work. We've had over 200 pieces out and published in magazines nationally, internationally. But I lost everything nine years ago. And I had to start over. So everybody in my marketplace knew me as a real estate broker. They did not know me as a photographer.
So we started literally at zero but I took all the knowledge that I have from a marketing, branding standpoint, positioning and I had to put it to work. And it took a couple of years to really rebound because I was no joke, I was homeless for two weeks living in my car. Thankfully, my buddy, a lad that I grew up with. He allowed me to live on his couch for a little while until I could afford $400 a month. Taking newspaper gigs and other night life magazine type of things to get those $30, $40 gigs because I was at zero. Nobody knew me as a photographer. And today, fast forward, last year we did ... I think we're just over 2,000 professional headshots. We have corporate clients like DuPont company, Accenture, GE Aviation. We had the local real estate companies and all like that. But we also do a thing called Santa Experience.
We went from zero nine years ago, this will be our 10th year doing it. And we make 30, in between 30, $35,000 in a three-day period every holiday. And we're really excited about that. Because this is all about marketing, branding, positioning. So it's purposely aligning us. Now, on top of that, we build it up to a team of nine people and we went crazy and all of a sudden we are managing people. And we were doing all these crazy amounts of weddings. Myself, personally was up to 50 weddings a year. And then I was like, "Okay, I gotta take my life back." And we kept peeling it back a little bit. And when Melissa and I came together, she saw the chaos there because I was the idea person, putting everything out there. And she was the organized one. It's like, "Oh, this is a little bit of a mess." But something ... Let me turn it over to you because it's kind of like where our world came together.
Melissa Pruitt: Yup. So my background is not in photography. I actually come from a psychology background. And that work led me to work with a lot of different clients from all different walks of life. So I went to school, and I have my master's degree in the psychology field and worked with people. Everyone, from women with body image issues to families in crisis to corporate level executives trying to make career changes. And I also, within that process got involved and became NLP certified practitioner. For those of you that don't know NLP. It's neuro-linguistic programming. So it's all about communication and how we communicate. So what's really great is, I brought this knowledge I have into the photography world. And Paul was saying that when our worlds collided, because of my work with psychology and systems and basically, managing different cases and people. I had become very organized.
So I am known as the productivity person in the business. I'm all about productivity and creating systems. Systems that are gonna be sustainable for your business and last all the way through it. Because again, as entrepreneurs what you will discover when you're on this journey, that it really is a marathon. And you have to really set up systems in place. So that you won't end up sabotaging yourselves because a lot of times, we end up doing things. We go in to this with that though that, we're gonna be our own boss, we're gonna have our own schedule. And we end up doing things that sabotage ourselves and not have productive habits. The other thing to it on the psychology piece along the way, I really became involved a lot with mindset. And especially with the NLP, I'm talking about communication. The way that the human brain works is really the majority in the battle of business is your mindset and that's really what you know, really sets apart a business professional to like a business entrepreneur.
That really makes that difference is that mindset piece. And a lot of times with the mindset, it can really help us and it can hurt us along the way too. So with the work that I did with psychology and mindset and that's a lot of things I talk about people when I do coaching is, what is holding you back? What's blocking you? What internal limiting beliefs you have that are keeping you from getting what you want? And that's the work that we do with Photographer Entrepreneur is really bringing in those business practices combined with the mindset pieces and it really makes it a nice marriage, a nice combination because you have to have both. You have to have that perception in place. But then, you also have to have those procedures that are gonna help you do the things. So that you can get to business. Get things done. So that's my background and with gamble, we found with Photographer Entrepreneur, what we do is that, we bring all this to fruition with the work that we do with our clients and the coaching and mentoring that we do. And really makes it a nice balance.
Paul Pruitt: Yeah. And I think that's what we were brought in to do with LightPro. And that's what we're really excited about that we have the opportunity to share our experiences in the contrast that we have. But also, what we do on a daily basis that's very highly effective that positions us to marketed brand and positioned ourselves. For some us, you might be brand new and you need to go out there and you're 007 secret agent. Nobody know that you exist, right? And it's really tough in this over saturated market. Like in every marketplace that we go to, it doesn't seem to be a scarcity of photographers around, right? So it's something that it's really exciting for us to come in. To share the knowledge because we really need to position you or help reposition you because some of you might be really experienced and the marketplace just came and evolved around you and you're like, "Oh my goodness! What happened?" And it can create some frustration, internal pieces as well that maybe there's certain things that we can do to reposition internally as well as externally. So that we can separate you from the crowd. And that's okay.
Understand that we book our weddings every year even though we're scaling back now on purpose to do more online coaching in with our community that we have with the inner circle. But it's something that we're really excited because we can bring this knowledge. And that it works in many different industries in a very validated work. It took me from being homeless to creating a multi six figure a year business and it's just the two of us in photography not the teaching side. Like actually in the photography. Doing in-person sales, doing marketing, branding and positioning where no joke like, we have brides before they're engaged ... Like, we just had this happened last month. We were in Jamaica last month and this bride knew years in advance before she got engaged, we were gonna photograph her wedding in Jamaica. We didn't know that.
Melissa Pruitt: But she knew it.
Paul Pruitt: Yeah, but she knew it. And it's like creating, position yourself so that you're top of mind to the right people.
Melissa Pruitt: Exactly.
Paul Pruitt: And that's really our message today is to give a challenge. To get you guys really excited to do something different this week. And I know that you've had, had some great challenges over the last several weeks. And what is our challenge today?
Melissa Pruitt: So this week ... And it kind of leads into what you were talking about is how do we become top of mind? How do we standout? What do we need to do to separate ourselves from the crowd? And I think that's what you're talking about is, those things that are gonna distinguish you because again, with photography, it is over saturated market. So what can you do to specifically set yourself apart? And it's how you basically standout in your community and the connections that you make.
Paul Pruitt: Right. And I tell you what, that most of the training that we see people go through. It's very traditional style training and it's gonna push you through the funnel of what everybody else is doing, right? And the thing for us it's like, how can we decrease the overwhelm? How can we decrease the stress? How can we be more effective with the effort that we put out and with the time that we put out. So think about it in a way like if you're gonna go fishing. And we don't even fish. So we love this as analogy but we don't even fish. But some of you can give us a better analogy. But think about it, you go to the popular spot and that's where everybody has the same information right? You go to the popular spot and you want to get the big catch. And what happens is you go there and there's 50 other people in that same pond, right? And you're in a small pond and there's 50 other people and feels like the photography market.
And what happens is, what you're gonna do is you're gonna cast in and you're competing for that big catch with all these other people, right? And the challenge is it's like we need to flip the script. We need to look at marketing and branding differently and this is how you're gonna reposition yourself right out the gate. And it's something that we're gonna share at LightPro because it's something that we did that I went from like the first wedding that I photographed because of the techniques that we did. The first wedding I photographed was at a multimillion dollar estate. Like, right out the gate. So I didn't go for like the low end. I purposely did certain things that positioned myself to somebody that actually work very high. Very, very high up at DuPont company and boom! Right out the gate, I position myself. And you can do that as well.
And it's something that, you need to look at it. And you need to say to yourself, "Wow! I'd rather be in a stock pond with a catch that I want." Like, "These are the fishes that I want. I want to be in stock pond and nobody else there." Like, wouldn't you like to be in a stock pond where you cast a real boom! Nobody else is there. So while everybody else ... Because I'll tell you like 10, 15 years ago, before all these internet stuff came around. Everybody else was afraid of rejection so where do they spend most of their time? Where they would send mail out or they would take ads in the newspaper or they would go on to the telephone book and all like that right? And that's what we call, hope and pray marketing. Where you cross your fingers, hoping and praying that the phone rang back then and people will contact you.
Now, the irony is, this is translated into today's world. That it's all about, "Let me do a Facebook post. Let me do an Instagram. Let me do Snapchat." And all that stuff. And there's nothing wrong with that. We do very big with internet marketing and at LightPro, we're gonna actually share one of our techniques where we do an $11 a day ad. When do turn it on. And right around $150 every time that we do this ad. $150 worth of spend, we get a $6,000 wedding client on average. A little bit over $6,000. And we're in a $1,500 marketplaces. Like we are not in a very wealthy, high-end marketplace like that. The average photographer in our marketplace are the $1,500 weddings. And we're getting a needle in a haystack. And it's very specific, very targeted and it was tested.
I actually did ... Like a year and a half ago, we did a test. We went to spoke in Pittsburgh we did a test. I went the week before and I booked two wedding consultations in Pittsburgh and we're even in that market. It was at the same exact ad and it was effective in a whole different marketplace. Maybe we should do it for St. Pete as well. Right before LightPro will come in and actually transition over the wedding appointments for you guys. So the key though is that we want to fish in a stock pond. We don't want to go where everybody is. And everybody's on social media.
Melissa Pruitt: And this is a concept where we really talk about influencers.
Paul Pruitt: Yes.
Melissa Pruitt: So when we say influencers. I'm not sure what's the first thing that comes to mind for you. But influencers really those people that are the, "It crowd." Those people that know people. And you want to become friends with them. You want to start to connect with them. And again, like Paul was saying, when he purposely went out first into the wedding market. He purposely put himself in front of people that he knew would make an impact in their community. These might be people that are involved with their community or community service. They might be looked high upon in whatever industry that they're working with. It's the really know who those influencers are and to make connections with them. And real life connections not just those Facebook post and the Snapchat and everything like that. Because at the end of the day, a face to face, hand shake, coffee, lunch is gonna do a whole lot more than the Facebook post.
Paul Pruitt: Right. Now, think about this, we're so caught up in the social media internet, right? And it comes back in the same way like how ads were years ago. Like mailers and things. We're trying to hit the masses. We don't have a rejection. When somebody throws a piece of mail on the garbage like we're not like, "Oh that hurt me." Right? But we're always typically afraid of rejection. That's why we don't talk to people face to face. But here's the irony though, we're so caught up in social media, we forgot along the way ... We've allowed social media to take control of us where we forgot that they're actually, believe or not, this might be a surprise for you but there is a human being on the other side of every single one of those social media accounts.
And I'll tell you what, we have not been in a more extreme world where we have become disconnected with one another. Where in the pursuit of being connected with one another. We don't hang out anymore. We don't really talk. We think that, "Oh well I liked your post you know, three weeks ago. Didn't you see that?" Like, "I thought that was us communicating." Like we became totally disconnected, right? Now, here's the cool thing. And this is what I count in our local market, that all of our competitors are in that pond. They are all competing and they're all boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Right there. They're spending all day and all night and they're doing the social media post. And trust me we do the social media thing as well. We do it in a smart, very purposeful way though where it doesn't take our lives over. Actually we spend maybe only about an hour or two hours a month and we have over our post on for the entire month. So we're very methodical on that.
But the thing is, is that, we want to take back control of our time. We don't want to have overwhelm. So we decide instead of going where everybody else is fishing. We go into the pond that's stock with exactly what we want. The target market, who's the people that we really want to attract. Not the randomness that comes to us through social media. Because you can't control who comes to you but you can control who you go to. Think about that. Because for us, not all of our friends and family members are our advertisers. They're not our client. So we actually go to the people that we want to attract. So the interesting thing that I have for you though is if I went on your Facebook account right now. Because that's where a lot of you are spending a lot of time. And you're doing social media post blowing our face up hoping that you get the leads.
And if I went through all your people on your friends list. Let's say there's 500 people. How many of those people on your friends list ... If I did a blind survey. I went to them directly, each person, those 500 people. And I say, "You know what? Tell me the top three photographers in your marketplace? Who comes the top of mind first?" Does your name show up as number one, number two or number three? Because I'm telling you what, it's a crowded space. There's a lot of people. There's a lot of noise. We're all taught the same thing, "Boom! Boom! Boom! Post frequently. Do this, that." Right? So it's a lot of noise. How do you standout from the crowd? So the thing is if you're not in those top three, you're not getting contacted. Understand that you're not getting recommendation or referral. And you have to be okay with that. Now, what you need to do though is you need to take it to the next level though. If you're not at number one, they're not contacting you unless number one's not available.
Melissa Pruitt: Yeah, it's all about owning ... We call it, owning a person's piece of mind. So when you think of photographer, are you top of mind? We just actually had this conversation today. Talking about some healthy meals. I wanted to get back into healthy meals. So I was thinking you know, "Who can I contact to make these healthy meals." And I thought, Sherm, he's the cater. He's the ... I don't even know what he does for healthy meals. I've never even taste it. He does great work but I've never seen him do like the home delivery service for healthy meals but I'm like, "I'm gonna contact Sherm." Because he came first top of mind.
And that's what you need to do and bring in to your business is when people think a photographer or a wedding photographer or senior photographer or whatever genre you're in that people think of you top of mind. And then from there, you've influence them. You know that you own piece of their mind. You know that you've made an impact on those influencers to talk about you to share. And that's how you're gonna get those referrals. That's how you're gonna get into that space.
Paul Pruitt: Right. So think about these influencers. You right now, know people in your life, in your world that touch a lot of other lives. That they themselves ... And it could be if you're photographing like let's say holiday sessions or children. Maybe one of your friends that you totally take for granted owns a daycare, right? Or maybe you have a friend that is a real estate agent and interesting thing, first-time home buyers are the or the same typical avatar is somebody that's getting married. You know, why aren't you having lunch with these people. And that's really the challenge. That's where we want to come back to for this week, for the challenge.
Melissa Pruitt: Yes, get to challenge. Get to work here with us.
Paul Pruitt: So the challenge that we have for you guys this week is strip down the thousands of people that you're trying to get because you're doing the shotgun approach. You're just putting garbage out there right? It's coming back and it almost feel like a sniper. Who are exactly specifically on purpose, who you would like to influence? And why don't you write for this week, 10 people down. 10 people that touch many other life. That if you influence them, you would exponentially influence thousands of people probably by touching these 10 lives, right? Because if they believe in you, they're gonna be an advocate for you. They're gonna be a raving fan. They're gonna pass out your business cards like they were getting paid to do it, right?
Melissa Pruitt: And this isn't have to be complicated. So really thinking about it. Really sit down and take some time, get a piece of paper out, write these 10 people down. But think about those people that are in your life already that are impacting lives, that are in the community, that you see them all the time. Those people that just pop all the time and they insinuate everywhere. Those are the influencers. Those are the people that you need to connect with. And then, we're gonna get to the second piece of this challenge for this week too, once you get your list.
Paul Pruitt: All right. So what we want the challenges and we'll go through the details of how you submit for the challenge. I believe Sabrina's gonna be posting it.
Melissa Pruitt: She just posted the link.
Paul Pruitt: Okay, awesome! We're right on track. Yes, we're right on track. So what we're doing is we want you to write those 10 people down. Just tell us the 10 names and that's really privately for you. But we want you to take this action step because ideas aren't power, knowledge is not power unless it's coupled with action. We need you to take the knowledge and move forward with it. Because we really want a quick win here to shift your life and your business and get you to have amazing results to get in preparation ... Because we love to have you as a testimonial you know, coming on on-stage, or those talk shows at LightPro that you just did this one simple thing. And is just shifted everything for you. Because what we want you to do, the next step that we want to this. It's one thing there to make a list.
Melissa Pruitt: One thing to make list.
Paul Pruitt: Because we all make list, right?
Melissa Pruitt: We all make list. I have tons of lists.
Paul Pruitt: And then we put them aside. She has a books of lists.
Melissa Pruitt: I do, I collect them.
Paul Pruitt: But we want you to do is take action. We want you to at least have one person ... I want you to like circle or star or however you submit this right? I want you to have one person that you're committed to that you're gonna contact and take the lunch or have a coffee just to say hi. Because it's been forever that you have and you're gonna do ... Now, it's great if between now and LightPro, you did this with one person every single week. But that's not the challenge right now. But I tell you what, if you did that, how would your life change? Because no matter what ... And this is the key. This is the exciting thing. By having one lunch with somebody and having a genuine interest in them. And I'm not talking about trying to sell them and convince them to buy you photography services, right?
This is actually getting to know people because when people feel that you actually have a genuine interest in them, they will go out their way. They will go to the ends of the Earth to help you achieve your goals. So just listen, just be there, be present, experience. Recreate friendships or create a new one that you didn't have before. But you're gonna start linking in. Because it normally takes about six to nine contacts that if it's a new relationship to anchor what you're associated with. Like she knew the caterer. The guy Sherm, he's been around for a while. So it slowly drift over time that ... You're herb screensaver just came across. It's like, "Oh we just disappeared." But it's something that you need to look at that, right? So go to the link that Sabrina just showed, which is lightprophoto.com/lightpro-challenge and enter that challenge.
Melissa Pruitt: Yes. So for some of you, this is gonna be ... And we know some of you, this might be a little bit terrifying or outside of your comfort zone because you actually have to you know, call someone or have a conversation, just set up a lunch or coffee, whatever the case might be. But I'm telling you, when you step out of your comfort zone, that's where all the magic happen. Like Paul was saying, this is not getting together and selling your photography talk. This is you having just a coffee, a lunch, old school. And really asking lots of questions. People love to talk about themselves. So if you have nothing to say, ask questions. Find out as much as you can about their business because again, when you show that interest, they're really gonna remember you. And next time that they have someone that has a photography need like, "Oh gosh! I had lunch with so and so." And they're gonna think of you right away.
And Sabrina just wrote down the challenge here, write down the 10 people who are in your life who are influencers and then move forward. So we want you to take action. Again, it's not just about making the list. And if you have lunch with 10 of those people then, gosh, we want to hear about that. But if you can have lunch or coffee with that one person, schedule it. You know you're gonna see things change.
Paul Pruitt: And I want you to seriously think about this. Because this is how the reality is for us. You have that one lunch or that one coffee with that person. You've met eye to eye, you broke bread, you created an emotional connection, right? Just like in-person sales, just like everything else we talk about in this business, right? For the next year, all your competitors could not post enough on social media to get the influence you got by making that face to face contact to having that personal time. And I really want you to dive back and remember that they're human beings that also feel isolated just like you do and like we do wherein we're spending too much time online. And you know, we get stir crazy, that they would love something more than a like or comment. And they would actually like to hangout, like we all used to do years ago before we got caught up in all these stuff, right?
You will not believe how you will shift immediately how you look at your business and how it will impact you and your business and your life and your family's life. Just by meeting, making eye to eye contact. Keep this mind, and if you have a concern doing this, you can't photograph the wedding, the event, the session virtually, you're gonna meet this people anyway at some point in time. So why aren't you doing it ahead of time. Right? Is there other notes and things because I know we have some things. We definitely want to make sure we covered it.
Melissa Pruitt: Yes, we definitely make sure we go everything. But that's your challenge. So make sure you go to that link to do the challenge. But we wanted to just make sure that we went over. Because we are gonna be at LightPro and for those that don't know, we want to get details about what LightPro is and why you need to be there. We're gonna actually be teaching on that Tuesday. So it's actually from September 24th to the 27th. And what we're teaching on that Tuesday morning, all about branding and marketing and doing it to have sustainable business. And I guess the biggest word is sustainable. Things that you could have in place, systems that you can have in place, things that you can do so that you really have success all year long. Again, this is a marathon, it's not a sprint.
Paul Pruitt: Yes. We're not just teaching but we're gonna be there, right?
Melissa Pruitt: Yes.
Paul Pruitt: We're very approachable, we're real people. We went from zero and we rocked this out. We've done this with other businesses in our lives. And it's something that, it wasn't by mistake, it wasn't like one way we found some little trick type of thing. This is about dedication. It's about consistency. It's about pivoting. It's about testing. It's about evolving and being relevant and staying relevant. And it's so important because I think so many people thinks you have to do things one way, right? So we're very approachable. Do during LightPro, this is just an extra bonus but by default you know, we'll be by probably a bar or a free meal or free drink. You got us for hours. No I'm kidding. Well, we're available no matter what.
Melissa Pruitt: Absolutely. So it's gonna be at St. Petersburg. And again, there's gonna be a lot of different people there in the industry that gonna be sharing all their talents.
